Improving the digital connectivity of frontline site workers is key to recruiting the next generation of construction industry talent, says ISG’s technology lead.

John Bromilow, group technology director at ISG, provided the insight for a Construction News survey and subsequent report, which considered the case for digitally empowering construction workers.

The survey aimed to better understand how digitisation can enhance remote workers and boost employee attraction, retention, and upskilling.

The poll surveyed almost 600 respondents directly involved in delivering projects, with 98% reporting back that they were in favour of ‘digitally empowering’ operatives.

John highlighted the link between embracing the latest technology and not only attracting the top talent into the construction industry, but retaining them as well – identifying this as a key area that ISG focuses on within its own recruitment and retention strategy.

“Just over two-thirds of respondents [71%] recognised that technology helps with employee attraction, and at ISG our experience is that this is a major factor in attracting and retaining the best candidates,” he said.

“If we cannot demonstrate the built environment sector is a natural home for the most technology-literate candidates, then we will be squandering the opportunity to attract those very people we need to drive the revolutionary change necessary to increase productivity and sustainability.”
